Frequently asked questions

Short, honest answers — about the web app at app.cashlog.org. More story and purchase: cashlog.org · Deep dives in the knowledge hub.

Where do I use cashlog — and where do I buy?

Your portfolio lives in the app: app.cashlog.org (or the link from your purchase email). You calculate and store there daily — locally in your browser.

Info, pricing and purchase are on cashlog.org. Deliberately separate: website for the decision, app for your portfolio.

Does cashlog work offline?

Yes — your portfolio keeps working without internet: calculations and storage run locally. No mandatory account, no cloud requirement for your portfolio.

On your first visit the app shell and libraries are loaded — your financial data is not sent to us. For offline start via home-screen icon, open once online at app.cashlog.org/legacy/, then install. Live FX rates and photo/OCR scan need a connection; PDFs with a text layer often work offline. Your saved portfolio does not.

How is cashlog different from other apps with a similar name?

cashlog is the web app and brand of Christian Bahnmüller (Austria) — built for long-term strategies: XIRR, bonds, dividends, FX. Local, no subscription pressure, one-time purchase with a cashlog.org licence.

Other products share similar names. You can trust us by cashlog.org / app.cashlog.org, the imprint and the feature set described here.

Why does XIRR matter — and what do I get from it?

In your brokerage you often see mainly the price. Your real result comes from all cash flows: buys, sells, dividends, coupons, currency.

XIRR (Extended Internal Rate of Return) includes every amount on the right date and gives your annualised return — the number that matches your money. Not gut feeling, but traceability.

More in the blog: Why XIRR can be the honest return metric (DE).

How safe is my data?

Your portfolio stays with you: In normal use portfolio data does not leave your machine. Statement scans are not sent to cashlog.org automatically. You do not need an account with us and do not have to put your wealth in our cloud.

For extra peace of mind: export a JSON backup any time and keep it locally. Details in the privacy policy.

Can I use cashlog on multiple devices?

Yes — that is what the cashlog.org licence is for. With a cashlog.org licence or trial key you activate cashlog on up to 3 of your own devices — e.g. Mac at home, iPad on the go, Android in the browser.

Each device stores your portfolio locally. For the same state everywhere use device sync in the app (your cloud file, no cashlog server). That is separate from “add to home screen”.

From the 4th device activation is blocked until you deactivate one registered device under Options → Licence. Sharing your key with others is not intended (see terms).

How do I install cashlog as an app on my device?

You do not need the Apple App Store: cashlog can be pinned as an icon on iPhone, Android or desktop — like a native app, data stays local.

Best install from app.cashlog.org/legacy/ (not the root URL without /legacy/). Open online once, then add the icon — that also enables offline start.

In the app: Options → cashlog as an app on your device — Safari (iPhone), Chrome/Edge (Android/desktop). An email link with ?pwa=1 opens help directly.

Android / Google Play: A Play Store listing (Trusted Web Activity, package org.cashlog.app) is being prepared — then a real store install. Until then: Chrome → Install app. iPhone: Play does not help; use Safari → Add to Home Screen.

Note: The home-screen icon is not the same as the 3-device licence. For one portfolio across devices: device sync in options.

What is the 14-day trial licence?

14 days full access — free. After sign-up you receive a trial key by email. You use cashlog like with a cashlog.org licence: unlimited positions, all features, no subscription.

The trial works on up to 3 of your own devices (e.g. Mac, iPad, Android) — same device limit as the paid licence. Under Options → Licence you see status including remaining days and device counter (e.g. “Device 2/3”).

After expiry you switch to demo mode (max. 5 positions). Your data stays. For full access again: request a new trial key or buy a cashlog.org licence.

3-device limit reached? Remove the licence under Options → Licence on another device and activate here again — the app tells you clearly instead of silently falling back to demo.

XIRR vs TWR — and why question your bank’s return figure?

Your bank often shows only the price — e.g. +8 %.

XIRR includes everything that actually happened to your money: buys, sells, dividends, coupons and FX — each on the right date. That is the return that matches your wallet.

TWR shows how your holdings developed — without the effect of when you added or withdrew money. Useful when comparing strategies.

Why question the bank figure? With regular dividends or active trading, the return shown by the bank is in most cases incomplete, distorted and mathematically imprecise.

In cashlog you see XIRR and TWR side by side. More in the blog (DE).

Where do FX rates come from?

For conversion to euro cashlog uses ECB reference rates (via Frankfurter, ECB filter). Solid reference values — your broker rate may differ.

Binding FX values are on your statements. More in privacy and terms.

How do my trades and dividends get into cashlog?

You stay in control: Enter buys, sells and distributions yourself — or import statements via file or scan. No mandatory broker cloud import. With scan, cashlog parses the statement in your browser — no automatic upload.

The small upkeep pays off: clean data, full privacy and return metrics that match your real cash flows.

Does my statement stay on my device when I scan?

Yes. Scanning runs in your browser. cashlog.org does not receive the PDF or photo automatically — we do not store or analyse it. You see a preview and decide what enters the portfolio.

Optionally you can send us a redacted statement if a format is not recognised. Details in the privacy policy.

How does cashlog handle taxes?

cashlog shows how your portfolio after tax might look — for your own overview.

  • If your statement shows a tax amount, cashlog uses that.
  • If it is missing, cashlog uses a rate from settings — that is only an estimate.
  • cashlog does not prepare a tax return, does not replicate your bank’s loss offsetting, and does not calculate treaty credits.
  • For filings and advice: tax authority or tax adviser.
  • You are responsible for the accuracy of your entries and imports.

More in the blog: Taxes on your statement — explained simply · in the app under Options → Taxes.

Is there a money-back guarantee?

Yes — 14-day money back. You can try cashlog at ease; if it is not for you, the rule on the purchase page and in the terms applies.

Details: purchase page on cashlog.org.
